Cruise Committee

The summer is fast approaching and with it a new cruising season.  The Cruise Committee has put together a number of cruise itineraries which should be very enjoyable.  Included this year is a trip to the Saint John River in New Brunswick, Canada.  The itineraries (1 page) are posted on the club’s web site.

For those without a vessel, many of the locations are reachable by land and I encourage you to join us for our dinners ashore.  The Maine coast has many interesting inns where you can stay and get the added bonus of joining the fleet’s activities.  This also applies to those with boats that are not set up for overnights – cruise with us during the day and spend the night at an inn.  For those driving, please sign up for the dinner when the cruise sheets are posted so that we can include you in our reservations.

Jewell Island

June’s Shakedown Cruise will start Friday (6/15) on the Damariscotta River with an overnight at Ocean Point Marina where we have planned a cookout at the Marina.  The current plan is to have you bring your own entrée for the grill and a pot luck item to share, e.g. a salad, dessert, etc.  Saturday morning we will have a tour of the new Bigelow Labs building.  That evening we’ll anchor in Harmon Harbor on the Sheepscot River where dinner is planned at the Grey Havens Inn.  Sunday, we return to the Club for the Father’s Day Brunch.  For those who desire dockage or moorings at Ocean Point Marina, please contact Vickie in late May or early June to make your reservations.

In July, we’ll be heading to Casco Bay for 8 days where we will be visiting some of its islands and marinas.  During this cruise, there will be an optional side trip (July 7 & 8) to Wentworth by the Sea in Portsmouth.  For those desiring dockage at Wentworth or DiMillo’s (July 9), please contact Peter Gale as soon as possible.

The 11-day August cruise will be heading to Penobscot Bay for several days and then on to Northeast Harbor where we will have dinner at the Asticou Inn.  For those not traveling to Canada, the cruise will be heading for Rockland (August 10) and the boat show.  Again, please contact Peter Gale for dockage in Rockland.

From Northeast Harbor, the Canadian Cruise will gather together in Cutler on August 8 where a group dinner is planned.  After stops in Head & Dipper Harbors, we pass thru the falls on August 10 and spend the night at RKYC where the following morning we will have an RKYC member give us an orientation on the Saint John River and its many attractions.  A total of 5 days will be spent on the river with dinners planned in Gagetown and our final night at RKYC.  On August 16, we will be on our way to Eastport and then Roque Island the following day.  The cruise ends August 18 in Southwest Harbor with cocktails on the dock.  From there, we will head home to BHYC.

Should you be interested in the Canadian Cruise and have not been in contact with me already, please do so as there are a number of items that need to be addressed this spring.

We wrap up the season with a visit to Muscongus Bay in September (7th – 9th) with a planned dinner at the Anchor Inn on the 8th.

So join us for another cruising season on the coast.

Greg Shea, Fleet Captain

Ship’s Store

The Ship’s Store is looking forward to another banner year! We shall again be featuring some new items including wine bottle stoppers as well as Christmas tree ornaments for your gift giving pleasure!! Merchandise is presently having burgees embroidered on it, and we are awaiting the receipt of orders of belts, sandals, burgees and Tervis Tumblers.

But we do have a favor to ask. We would like to offer 350 piece Jigsaw Puzzles to sell and are soliciting pictures of BHYC activities or scenes that would be appropriate. These need to have good clarity and good color. The sky should be blue, not gray, for good contrast in outdoor scenes. We will be selecting five different shots to send to the manufacturer. Pictures of various club activities, including the juniors, tennis, sailing, parties, as well as exterior and interior shots of the club and grounds would all be appropriate. Please send your pictures to Peggy Chapman.

We are working closely with the Flags and the Office to update the Information Binder, the Entertainment Committee to prepare the special Events Book, the Dining Room Committee and Manager to prepare the Reservation Book and the Ship’s Store Committee. Hostess Orientation will be held on Monday morning, June 4th. Hostesses will also be on the Desk for each Thursday Night Social during the season, so that guest will be greeted and given name tags and members will have an opportunity to sign up for meals and special Events, and purchase items at the Ship’s Store.

The Louison-Callahan family is excited to introduce to BHYC the new boat they purchased this fall, in Wrightsville Beach North Carolina. The ‘LUCY’ is a 37’ classic fly bridge sport fisherman built in Havana, Cuba in 1960. Built of Cuban Mahogany and sheathed in fiberglass, the boat has undergone a complete rebuild and restoration, including new twin Yanmar 315hp diesels, a Northern Lights genset, new electronics, holding tank and top to bottom cosmetics.

Known as a Cubavich, only 13 boats were built in the late 50’s – 60’s before the Cuban revolution. At the time, Havana was a prime destination for American sport fishermen. In West Palm Beach the Rybovich Yard was building highly sought after sport fishermen boats. In Havana, there was an American businessman named Howard Anderson who didn’t want to wait the two years for a Rybovich to be built. So, during a tournament in which one of the Rybovichs was on the dock and the owner otherwise distracted, the boat was hauled under cover of darkness, all its lines and dimensions copied, and the boat put back in the water with the owner no wiser. The local yard then built an exact duplicate with Cuban craftsmen. Thirteen boats were ultimately built with some design changes creeping in to respond to local conditions. Because of their design origins, they came to be known as ‘Cubavichs’. Most are practically indistinguishable from their Rybovich cousins.

All of the boats made it over to Florida before and soon after the revolution. Unfortunately, Anderson was arrested by Fidel Castro and executed as a CIA spy.

The LUCY was rebuilt in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. She has been in the water all winter as work has progressed and the family has periodically gone to visit and get acclimated to the boat.

Current plans are for her to come North in early May via the ICW stopping in Boston before coming home to Boothbay.

The Cuckolds Rescue Team is gearing up for the upcoming busy Spring/Summer season. Following is a brief update on progress and plans.

Construction plans remain unchanged and on schedule. Cuckolds Light has sufficient funds on hand to complete its 2012 building plans and will resume activities on the island when the water is turned on and weather permits. Marden Builders assures us that they plan to complete the Keepers’ Quarters building by Fall 2012.

Cuckolds organization is financially sound. Osman Page LLC , a local bookkeeping and accounting services firm has been engaged to assist in implementing new accounting and business processes to ensure additional financial security and internal controls.

Cuckolds Light has entered into a restitution agreement. The organization has received personal property including boats, vehicles, trailers, antiques and other property and sold these things at two auctions and other sales. Cuckolds Light also received and recorded a mortgage that is in foreclosureproceedings.

Cuckolds has filed for reinstatement of its tax-exempt status. When the IRS automatically revoked the tax-exempt status of more than 250,000 organizations in 2011, Cuckolds was included because our former Treasurer filed our returns late. This large number of automatic revocations created a huge backlog of cases at IRS that has slowed the normal process. Cuckolds has filed for reinstatement and will receive reinstatement of its tax-exempt status as of the date the reinstatement of exemption application was filed (October 2011) and should receive retroactive reinstatement.

Cuckolds’ Board of Directors has been expanded, adding new breadth and depth. In addition to the active volunteer involvement of many who serve on the Cuckolds Council, Cuckolds is pleased to announce appointment of five new Directors. New Board members include Paul G. Coulombe, Marion Mundy, Edwin Green, Scott Larson, and Martin Moore. All of these new Board members are contributors, leaders, and active volunteers in the Cuckolds Rescue. This brings Board membership to nine, eight of whom have residences on Southport Island.

Cuckolds major donors and consequential volunteers all stepped forward to assist during the crisis. Several accelerated their pledge payments to assist with the temporary shortfall when first discovered, and continue to provide other valuable assistance, personal and professional, to help the organization and its work move forward as planned.
